Read article Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is a rare hepatic malignancy with a poor prognosis. It is known that Hepatitis B is both a risk factor and a prognosis factor for ICC. However, little is known about the clinical, pathological and radiological characteristics of ICC patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
A systematic review of relevant literature was performed using PubMed and EMBASE databases. HBV-associated ICC revealed several unique and interesting features, it was found to have higher alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), cancer antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) levels, capsule form....[more]

Read article Although only a small percent of breast cancer patients are diagnosed in metastatic stages, a significantly higher percent will develop disseminated recurrences at a certain point of their evolution, this event being responsible for a high number of cancer relate deaths.
In recent years a particular attention was paid for identifying the factors which might be responsible for the development of metastatic disease.
The current study included 27 patients submitted to surgery for breast cancer liver metastases in Dan Setlacec Center of Gastrointestinal Diseases and Liver Tra....[more]

Article DOI: 10.21614/sgo-24-1-22
Read article Background: Albumin (Alb) is often administered for patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT). However, the current status of Alb use after LT is unclear. We examined the current status of postoperative Alb administration and factors associated with massive Alb use after LT.

Methods: A total of 122 consecutive patients who underwent adult-to-adult LT between January 2013 and August 2017 were divided into 2 groups according to total amount of Alb used after LT: High group, Alb 1000 g; and Low group, Alb <1000 g.
Characteristics of postoperative Alb u....[more]

ORIGINAL PAPER, Feb 2019
Article DOI: 10.21614/sgo-24-1-31
Read article Background: Surgery is still the only curative treatment for patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (pNETs). Prognosis depends mainly on tumour characteristics.

Methods: The single-centred retrospective cohort study consisted of 58 patients with a histological confirmation of pNET, who were operated over a time span of 10 years. The analysis is focused on the type of surgery, post-operative morbidity, survival rates and prognostic factors.

Results: Median age at diagnosis was 53.28 years (SD 9.85; 21-81). The operative interventions p....[more]

Article DOI: 10.21614/sgo-24-1-37
Read article Introduction: Despite its limitations, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is still the most common used serum marker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Alpha-fetoprotein-L3 (AFP-L3), protein induced by vitamin K absence (PIVKA-II) and Glypican-3 (GPC-3) have been proposed as complementary biomarkers but their role is still controversial.

Aims and Methods: We prospectively included 101 patients with HCC and 52 control patients with liver cirrhosis with the aim to investigate the diagnostic performance of AFP, AFP-L3 PIVKA-II, and GPC-3 as single markers or in combination....[more]

Article DOI: 10.21614/sgo-24-1-45
Read article Background Aim: Spontaneous perforation of the sigmoid colon is defined as a sudden perforation of the normal colon in the absence of diseases. However, its etiology remains unclear.

Methods: Between January 2010 and December 2017, twenty-three patients who underwent Hartmann's operative procedure with colostomy for acute peritonitis due to sudden perforation of the sigmoid colon at our hospital were enrolled in this study. Patients were divided into two groups according to the cause of the perforation (i.e., spontaneous perforation in seven and diverticulosis....[more]

Article DOI: 10.21614/sgo-24-1-48
Read article Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is the most common cause of postoperative morbidity after laparotomy. Many independent factors show to increase risk of SSI. Prevention of SSI is very important especially intraoperative period.

Methods: Patients undergoing a standard midline laparotomy were prospectively randomized to use or not use a wound protector between September 2016 and January 2018. The 128 patients were eligible for the study. Preoperative and perioperative data, those can be risk factors for SSI, incidence of the SSI in each group were colle....[more]

Read article Background: Bronchobiliary fistula (BBF) is a rare complication of the hydatid liver disease. The diagnosis depends on clinical suspicion and radiologic evaluation. Surgical treatment is the mainstay way for the complicated hydatid liver cysts.
However, postoperative biliary fistula can make the situation more complicated. Bile leak test may be helpful for the prevention of this complication. In this study, the surgical management of a patient who developed BBF due to liver hydatid cyst was discussed with the literature.

Case Presentation: A patient (45-....[more]
