Diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscles (DRA) is a benign condition that generally occurs in 12 months post-partum women or in obese subjects who have suffered evident weight loss. Moreover, the association between rectus abdominis diastasis and ventral hernia is a common condition especially in multiparous women. Hernia correction alone without midline reinforcement increases the risk of hernia recurrence. We retrospectively evaluated PubMed databases, Embase, and the Cochrane Library by applying various combinations of the subject-related terms. The search terms identified wit....[more]

Background: Computed tomography (CT) is generally performed in preoperative evaluations of patients with colorectal cancer. Tumor location and extent are commonly evaluated in only axial-view CT images. Here, we evaluated the overall longitudinal structure and circumference of tumors by using both axial- and sagittal-view CT images acquired since January 2024.

Methods: From January 2024 to March 2025, twenty-three patients with colorectal cancer who underwent anterior resection at our hospital were retrospectively enrolled in this study. T....[more]

Purpose: Many factors, including body composition, can influence the prognosis of colo-rectal cancer (CRC). This study aimed to investigate the effect of sarcopenia on survival in patients subjected to elective resection of colorectal cancer.

Methods: The study included 93 patients with adenocarcinoma of the colon or rectum scheduled for elective resection. Sarcopenia was diagnosed by CT scan measurement of the total cross-sectional area of the psoas muscles (TPA).

Results: Sarcopenia was detected in 29 patients (31.....[more]

Background: Colovesical fistula (CVF) is a rare but serious complication of intra-abdominal pathology, commonly resulting from diverticulitis, malignancy, or radiation. Management strategies vary, and the role of preoperative ostomy remains unclear in high-risk patients. Objective: To evaluate factors associated with mortality in CVF patients and examine the impact of preoperative ostomy on outcomes, particularly in relation to septic shock and SOFA scores.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on 181 patients with CVF between 2000....[more]

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women and a major cause of cancer-related deaths in women globally. Fatty acid synthetase (FASN) is a crucial enzyme in neoplastic lipogenesis. Increased FASN levels are frequently observed in various breast cancers; this enzyme contributes to metabolic oncogenic processes that are vital for the growth and survival of tumor cells. This study aims to explore the correlation between FASN levels and histopathological grading in breast cancer patients in Makassar.

Methods: This retr....[more]

Background: Gallbladder cancer is a rare malignancy with an incidence of 1-2 cases per 100,000 people. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type, with gallbladder sarcomatoid carcinoma comprising 1% of the cases. Due to its rarity, less than 100 cases have been reported in the literature.

Case Presentation: We report the case of a healthy 76-year-old female that was submitted to elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy for a pre-operative diagnosis of cholelithiasis. One month after surgery, the patient presented anorexia, asthenia and fever and ....[more]

Intra-ampullary papillary-tubular neoplasm (IAPN) is a rare, preinvasive neoplasm primarily affecting the ampullary channel, with minimal involvement of the bile duct, pancreatic duct, or duodenal papilla. It is characterized by papillary and/or tubular growth, exhibiting variable cell lineages and dysplastic changes, resembling?intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs). IAPNs account for only 0.5% of gastrointestinal tumors, frequently showing high-grade dysplasia or small regions of invasive carcinoma. Precise diagnosis and treatment are crucial due to their malignant po....[more]

Background: A popular bariatric procedure for obese patients is the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). The RYGB technique includes creating two anastomoses, which may result in blind pouches at the level of the anastomoses.

Case presentation: We present the case of a 36 years old patient with history of RYGB who presented episodes of abdominal cramps accompanied by postprandial nausea and vomiting in the epigastric area and left iliac fossa and flank. We found a dilation of the gastro-jejunal stump anastomosis and of the jejuno-jejunal anasto....[more]

Severe acute pancreatitis presents a clinical challenge due to its rapid progression and potential for multiple organ failure. We present a case study detailing the management of a 43-year-old male with a history of ankylosing spondylitis, axial spondylarthritis, chronic alcohol and tobacco use, admitted with epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting indicative of severe pancreatitis. Laboratory workup revealed markedly elevated triglycerides and inflammatory parameters and radiological findings were consistent with acute pancreatitis. The patient rapidly deteriorated, progressing wi....[more]
